Passive refers to something that is receiving an action, rather than performing an action itself. In grammar, the passive voice is used when the focus is on the action being done to the subject, rather than the subject itself. For example, in the sentence "The cake was baked by Mary", the cake is the recipient of the action of being baked, rather than the active agent doing the baking. In contrast, the active voice is used when the focus is on the subject performing the action, such as in the sentence "Mary baked the cake". Passive can also refer to a person who is not taking an active role in a situation or is allowing others to make decisions for them.
